Teenager with back pain:




  • Scheuermann's disease is categorized as an "osteochondrosis"
  • Typically 13-17 yr old with back pain
  • Possibly a growth disorder of the vertebral bodies (cause poorly understood)
  • Lower thoracic spine involved most frequently
  • Radiographs:
    • Narrowing of the disk space
    • Anterior wedging, endplate irregularities
    • Changes seen in >3 vertebral bodies (with at least five degrees anterior wedging in each)
    • Multiple Schmorl's nodes
    • Kyphosis usually >35 degrees
  • Treatment is conservative therapy to reduce stress and support back, rarely surgical
