Teenager with back pain:
- Scheuermann's disease is categorized as an "osteochondrosis"
- Typically 13-17 yr old with back pain
- Possibly a growth disorder of the vertebral bodies (cause poorly understood)
- Lower thoracic spine involved most frequently
- Radiographs:
- Narrowing of the disk space
- Anterior wedging, endplate irregularities
- Changes seen in >3 vertebral bodies (with at least five degrees anterior wedging in each)
- Multiple Schmorl's nodes
- Kyphosis usually >35 degrees
- Treatment is conservative therapy to reduce stress and support back, rarely surgical
